Collection and Tag-Based Limits
2 min read
Limit Entire Groups of Products
Instead of setting limits product by product, you can apply a single rule to an entire collection. This is especially useful for sale items, seasonal products, or any group that shares the same constraint.
Collection-Wide Limits
How to Set Up
- Go to Product Limits
- Click Add Product Limit
- Instead of selecting an individual product, choose a Collection
- Set the max quantity for that collection
- Click Save
Example: Sale Collection
Collection: Sale Items
Max: 5 items from this collection per order
Result:
Customer adds 3 sale items: OK
Customer adds 5 sale items: OK
Customer adds 6 sale items: Blocked at checkout
The limit applies to the total number of items from the collection in a single order, regardless of which specific products they are.
Tag-Based Limits
You can also apply limits based on product tags in Shopify. This is helpful when the products you want to group do not share a collection.
Example: Flash Sale Tag
Tag: "flash-sale"
Max: 3 items with this tag per order
Any product tagged "flash-sale" in Shopify will be subject to the limit.
Customer Segment Rules for Collections
Combine collection limits with customer tags for tiered access:
Collection: Wholesale Items
Standard customers: Max 5 items per order
VIP customers (tag "VIP"): Max 10 items per order
Wholesale customers (tag "Wholesale"): Min 20 items per order
How to Set This Up
- Go to Product Limits and add a collection-based rule
- Choose Apply to customer tag
- Enter the tag (for example, "VIP")
- Set the quantities for that group
- Repeat for other customer segments
- Click Save
What Customers See
At checkout, if the collection limit is exceeded:
"You can add a maximum of 5 items from the Sale collection per order. Please remove some items to continue."
Tips
- Use collection limits for promotional events to prevent abuse
- Tag-based limits are great for temporary campaigns -- add the tag to products when the campaign starts, remove it when it ends
- Collection limits and individual product limits both apply -- if a product has its own limit and also belongs to a limited collection, both rules are enforced
